Malcolm Guy is a director and producer of documentary and fiction films, President and co-founder of Productions Multi-Monde. Malcolm is active in immigrant rights organisations and in the independent film community. He contributed to establishing the international film fest Rencontres International du Documentaire de Montréal (RIDM), the Observatoire du Documentaire, the distribution company Les Films du 3 Mars, and is active in DOC (the Documentary Organisation of Canada). Malcolm's films look at a variety of local and international issues, with a particular interest in the Philippines. He is a founding member of the Centre for Philippine Concerns in Montreal.

Geneviève Brault

A graduate in journalism from the University of Quebec at Montreal, Geneviève Brault is a young director-screenwriter with a keen interest in social problems. Her experience as director and researcher for television allowed her to explore relevant issues like Canadian cultural diversity, the feminine condition and indigenous realities.

Her short film Portrait de bohèmes was included in the running for the Caméra Verte prize at the Montreal International Documentary Festival (known by its French acronym RIDM) in 2008. She directed a few reports for the show Culture Choc/Shock, which aired on RDI, Radio-Canada, CBC Newsworld and TV5. Her television report Lama Santen won her the Prix Galaxie from the Association of Cable Distributors in 2001. While working on her first feature movie, Tibet : Land of the Brave, Geneviève is also directing 14 half-hour documentaries about different social issues for the series 109 (RDI/Radio-Canada).

Parmi ses réalisations, on compte Mourir au large (2003) et Make Money. Salut, bonsoir ! (2004), qui a remporté le Prix du public et le Prix d'environnement, au Festival de films de Portneuf.

Directed by Michelle Smith and Paul Rickard, determiNATION songs interweaves the stories of three talented native singer/songwriters - Samian, Cheri Maracle and CerAmony – through the artists' creative process, inspiration, commitment and involvement with the resistance movements in their communities.

A rising star on the Quebec music scene, hip hop artist Samian raps in Algonquin about his personal struggles growing up, giving voice to a generation of dispossessed youth and obliging Quebecers to confront their historical relationship with First Nations.

Cheri Maracle, nominated for best female artist at the 2008 Aboriginal Music Awards, recently returned to her community of Six Nations. She sings about life on the rez and the struggle over unceded Mohawk land. She expresses what life is like for First Nations women, and pays homage to the thousands of missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada.

Cree rockers Pakesso Mukash and Mathew Iserhoff, members of CerAmony, use Pak's powerful guitar and Mat's soaring vocals to air the concerns of their people disenchanted with the destruction and sell off of Cree land to Hydro Quebec and big industry.

Growing up, many young Aboriginal artists experienced a loss of traditional culture and language. Music became a vehicle to reclaim native language and aspects of traditional culture that have been slowly eroding over centuries of colonial policy.

In the process, their work becomes a powerful source of strength, cultural renewal and political awareness for members of their community, particularly the youth, be it on or off reserve, in the city or in isolated settlements. For the broader public, these artists move people to dance, cry, think and act, all the while becoming more aware of the concerns facing First Nations peoples today.

Following the rhythm of the corn mill, the work in the fields, the preparation of meals and above all the passage of time, Here we remain explores the fabric of life in San Isidro Aloapam, Mexico, through the lives of five locals coping for years with the absence of loved ones. In this small community situated in Oaxaca State, the land, though fertile, is less and less cultivated. Faced with stiff American competition that forces down the price of corn in Mexico, the peasants are paradoxically obliged to go North to work on corporate farms in the United States. As a result, most families from San Isidro Aloapam resort to migration in order to meet their needs.

Rosenda, Modesta, Octavio, Elisabet and Merenciana allow us into the intimate corners of their lives. While some consider migration to be an alternative to poverty, others perceive it as a threat to the survival of the community and question the need to leave. Here we remain is the testimony of those who stay to those who have left, a film about longing for loved ones and hope for a better life.

Trabajadores migrantes Mexicanos: mirada a la realidad de los familiares que se queda detrás.

iguiendo el ritmo del molino de maíz, del trabajo en el campo, así como aquél de la preparación de la comida, pero sobre todo, moviéndose al son del tiempo que pasa, Aquí voy a andar nos lleva al corazón de la vida cotidiana de cinco residentes de la comunidad autóctona de San Isidro Aloapam, quienes han vivido durante varios años con la ausencia de sus seres queridos. En la pequeña comunidad del Estado de Oaxaca en México, la tierra, aun fértil, es cada vez menos cultivada. La concurrencia americana quien devalúa el precio del maíz obliga, paradójicamente, los campesinos a ir a cultivar la tierra de los agricultores en Estados-Unidos. En resultando de esta situación, la mayoría de las familias de San Isidro Aloapam tienen que recurrir a la migración para sobrevivir.

Cada quien a su manera, Rosenda, Modesta, Octavio, Elisabet y Merenciana comparten su punto de vista sobre este fenómeno que contribuye a la transformación de sus modos de vida. Si algunos consideran la migración como una alternativa a la pobreza, otros la ven mas bien como una amenaza a la supervivencia de la comunidad y cuestionan la necesidad de irse. Aquí voy a andar es el testimonio de los que se quedan a los que se van; una película sobre la espera de los seres queridos y las esperanzas de una vida mejor.

Productions Multi-Monde, en collaboracion con Les glaneuses, presentaron, en estreno, el documental Aquí voy a andar en las Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal el 19 y 20 de noviembre de 2010. Frente a un publico de 300 personas, la primera presentación tuvo mucho éxito y fue seguida por un intercambio entusiasta entre las cineastas y el publico. Después de la función una fiesta a sabor Latino les permitió a todos encontrarse para disfrutar de la música y bailar toda la noche! La segunda función fue también presentada frente a una sala llena y las reacciones fueron muy positivas.

Philippines: Waging War on the People by Montreal-based filmmakers Marie Boti and Malcolm Guy follows the story of Dr. Constancio Chandu Claver, an indigenous community leader from the Philippines who survives an assassination attempt that takes the life of his wife.

Alyce Claver is one of over 900 civilians, including students, workers, peasants and even a Bishop who have been assassinated in the Philippines since 2001 when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo came to power. The military and the police are clearly implicated and a climate of total impunity reigns.

This is “war on terrorism” Philippines-style. While community groups and progressive forces raise their voices in protest, the government continues to enjoy the backing of the international community and particularly the Bush administration.

The international campaign to Stop the Killings in the Philippines is gaining ground. In 2007 a Canadian Church and NGO-sponsored tour brought over Philippine church representatives, human rights workers and Dr. Chandu Claver.

Philippines: Waging War on the People follows the growing efforts to bring to light the situation in the Philippines, and some of the institutions and individuals who are adding volume to the voices of protest. Each day, thousands of women leave under developed countries like the Philippines to seek work as domestics in more prosperous places. What little money they earn they send home to their families. This crucial source of revenue to their country's economy has prompted the Philippine government to call these contract workers "modern day heroes."

Starting from the case of Flor Contemplacion, the Philippine maid hanged in Singapore for the killing of her abusive employer, this film shows the human and sometimes tragic side of this organized labor trade: failed marriages, family break ups, and exploitation and abuse at the hands of unscrupulous employers. The film also takes us to a shelter in Saudi Arabia where abused domestics seek refuge. These women will ultimately return home penniless.

The Philippine government sponsors training courses for young women to become nightclub dancers abroad, and facilitates their transportation. When it comes to human rights violations, however, the government is reluctant to pressure foreign governments for fear of losing revenue. This leaves women migrant workers vulnerable to exploitation.
